Whatever your passion it was the 80's. This is a sunset on Sunset Boulevard taken last Fall, a very 80's-inspired moment...plus we were stuck in traffic.

Charmed, I'm sure...Playlist for November 18, 2006

"I am the son, and the heir..." sang The Smiths long ago and far away, but if you're a fan of the WB's "Charmed," the version you're familiar with was done by Love Spit Love.

Love Spit Love was formed in 1992 by brothers Richard and Tim Butler of Psychedelic Furs fame after the Furs disbanded. Their version of "How Soon Is Now" was featured in the movie "The Craft" and became the theme song for the recently cancelled "Charmed."

The beautiful Victorian you see is the house where the Halliwell's lived and is just a stone's throw from downtown Los Angeles, not San Francisco where the series is supposed to take place. It is flanked by many beautiful Victorians on both sides of Carroll Avenue in the Angelino Heights neighborhood. It was such a treat to find this house and the many other charmed houses around it.

Club89...A Virtual Concert Encore...November 11, 2006

Thanks for checking in with the "Club 89" team for this week. If you tuned in over the Veteran's Day weekend, we were out hosting the KPRG Volunteer Appreciation Party and presented the "Totally 80's Virtual Concert" in our place.

This is Jane Wiedlin from the Go-Go's, as herself, getting ready to introduce the first act of the evening, ABC.

Pictured here is Martin Frye, lead singer of ABC in his fabulous tangerine suit, belting out favorites such as "Poison Arrow" and "The Look Of Love" in style.

Richard Butler from the Psychedelic Furs sounded exactly as he did more than twenty years ago. He was joined by his brother, and bassist Tim Butler along with guitarist John Ashton. Memorable performances included "Love My Way" and "Heartbreak Beat." As the Furs performed "Pretty In Pink," the stage was flooded with pink lights. We half expected Molly Ringwald to grace the stage. We heard that she was playing the lead role in Neil Simon's "Sweet Charity" at the Pantages Theater a couple of weeks later. Maybe next time.

During intermission we were invited to participate in an event known as the first-ever 80's karaoke sing-a-long. Jane Wiedlin introduced special guest and good friend Annabella Lwin, lead singer of Bow Wow Wow, who lead the audience with "I Want Candy." Talk about surprises! "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell followed. Unfortunately the words and the music were not synchronized but the experience was unique.

The last set of music came courtesy of the Human League. Front man Philip Oakey was joined by original band members Joanne Catherall and Susanne Sulley on a stage flooded with white lights, flowing white fabric and white hand-held synthesizers. The League presented favourites such as "Don't You Want Me," "Keep Feeling Fascination" and "Mirror Man" and ended the evening with "Together In Electric Dreams."

Certainly a night to remember. We hope you enjoyed the virtual concert.

The "Club 89" Tee

Originally produced for KPRG's fifth year anniversary celebration, the Club89 Cigarette Girl made her debut on January 27, 1999 and won the hearts of many. She was featured on a stark white tee with either a black or red logo. Back by popular demand, and on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Club 89, she is prominently featured on a backdrop of black and is available for a limited time. Sizes S-L-XL available in Black. Medium sized shirts available in Burgundy. $15. Proceeds benefit KPRG. Please send your inquiries/orders by email.

Welcome to the "Club89 on KPRG" blogspot, a site dedicated to fans of New Wave music and of our music program, "Club 89" heard every Saturday night from 9 to 11 p.m. on Guam's public radio station KPRG.
